Career Title: Microbiologist I / II

Location: Cupertino, CA


 Perform all environmental monitoring activities as well as microbiological testing


  • Performs environmental monitoring of controlled areas
  • Exercises good judgment when performing troubleshooting activities and corrective/preventive action plans
  • Generates all paperwork required for documenting microbiology testing
  • Initiates reports (alert/action, OOS/OOT, deviations etc.) and coordinates the timely completion of all corrective actions/preventive action (CAPA)
  • Evaluates microbiological test data from contract test labs
  • Generates and analyses trends of data generated
  • Identifies, and initiates system and procedural quality improvements as needed
  • Performs microbiological tests including BET, bioburden, media growth promotion, method validation, etc.
  • Provides guidance and training to other personnel
  • Reviews and releases test results at the manager’s discretion



  • BA/BS or Masters in Science (Microbiology Preferred)

Job Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience (Level I) with a BA/BS,  or 2-5 years (level II)
  • Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical GMPs


  • Ability to compute scientific formulas and measurements
  • Computer literate including Word and Excel
  • Demonstrate in his/her work a high level of commitment to quality and attention to detail
  • Remain focused in a constantly changing environment
  • Utilize Word and Excel extensively in daily work duties

Essential Job Functions

  • Knowledgeable and comfortable working with chemicals
  • Ability to use of both hands for extended periods of time while performing regular tasks
  • Ability to visually read and type
  • Ability to lift, move and handle materials weighing up to 25 lbs unassisted
  • Ability to walk, climb, stand, bend (neck and/or waist), kneel, reach, stoop, squat, twist (neck and/or waist), push, pull, and use of both hands and fingers for extended periods of time while performing tasks

Working conditions

  • Work in Microbiology Laboratory with materials, equipment and chemicals required for microbiology testing
  • Must be able to demonstrate, train, observe and perform microbiology testing and sampling in controlled areas
  • Handle potentially hazardous chemicals and potent active pharmaceutical ingredients, APIs.
  • Perform testing approximately 50%-75% of the work day in the Microbiology laboratory
  • Wear all required PPE to perform work tasks safely
  • Follow all DURECT’s safety rules and guidances
