While many old and new therapeutics are well tolerated, numerous compounds require localized advanced drug delivery technologies to decrease toxicity, increase efficacy and potentially modify biodistribution. Localized drug delivery enables a therapeutic concentration of a drug to be administered to the desired target without exposing the entire body to a similar dose. DURECT is developing a number of proprietary local drug delivery systems to meet these objectives.

Site-Specific Catheter Technology (DUROS® plus Catheter)

	By using a miniaturized catheter technology attached to the DUROS® system, we are capable of delivering a precise amount of drug to a target organ, tissue or synthetic medical structure, such as a graft.
	With direct delivery to a target area, we can potentially achieve higher drug concentrations at the desired site of action to minimize systemic side effects.
	By delivering sustained drug release over a targeted time period, we may reduce the frequency of drug administration.

Topical (TRANSDUR™ Transdermal Patch)

	Applied directly to the area (intact skin only).
	Designed to allow the medicine to penetrate targeted areas without significantly entering the bloodstream.

Local Injection (SABER™)

	Direct delivery to a target area, thus potentially achieving higher drug concentrations at the desired site of action to minimize systemic side effects.
	Sustained drug release over a targeted time period so as to reduce the frequency of drug administration.
	Biodegradable and does not require removal when the drug is depleted.
	Can be injected by means of standard needles and syringes.
