Our work in the development of drug-loaded implants for controlled release spans more than 20 years and we have developed a proprietary drug delivery platform that can deliver active agents from a few weeks to several months, and where the release profile can be tailored for continuous or delayed release. This technology involves incorporating active compounds in polymeric delivery systems to provide extended release of the active agent. We work with both biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymers and have developed formulations for a broad range of actives including peptides and proteins. Our experience includes manufacture of biodegradable excipients, formulation and process development, and cGMP production of clinical supplies.
Drug-loaded implants consist of a mixture of an active and a polymeric excipient formed into a fiber, rod, film or other shape. The implant may be a simple monolithic mixture or may incorporate a rate-controlling membrane. Drug release is controlled by a number of variables including drug content, polymer composition and molecular weight, device geometry, and manufacturing process. DURECT’S drug-loaded implants offer many advantages for long-term delivery of active ingredients.
