Description:
Main Purpose of Position: The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) will report to the CEO and be an integral member of the executive management team providing input and direction for corporate strategic development. The position will primarily be responsible for driving all aspects of sales and marketing activities for DURECT's pipeline, including responsibility for developing, managing and implementing a commercial business plan to achieve projected sales and profitability through product conception, launch and throughout the product lifecycle. In addition, the position will provide commercial input for, and be intimately involved in, strategic planning, portfolio management and R & D programs. Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Special emphasis will be placed on the following key product and functional areas: PosidurTM - Post Surgical Pain Management Product Candidate - Pre-market planning and execution
- Establish and hold individual advisory boards with thought leaders, high prescribers, and payers
- Create US Target Product Profile (desired package insert and claims) and establish positioning/core brand values
- Select US trade dress, trademark and brand name
- Identify Phase IV studies prior to launch and post launch
- Build public awareness campaign
- Assist Investor Relations in communicating the product value and sales and marketing strategies, as well as, setting appropriate expectations for sales and profitability performance
- Define and execute market entry strategy, including:
- US and ex-US market size and target patient population
- Identify target stakeholders in the buying process
- Refine US sales forecasts including stocking
- Perform primary market research
- Conduct competitive assessments and track activity
- Establish pricing and reimbursement strategy
- Analyze US pricing and reimbursement/coding issues
- Develop US phamacoeconomic argument and outcomes requirements
- Define and recruit commercial organization
- Develop US sales force strategy/sizing/structure to optimize coverage
- Build out commercial infrastructure and team with high caliber individuals
- Identify distribution system and customer service functions
- Provide strategic commercial leadership
- Develop all launch timelines
- Create line extension strategies and lifecycle management
- Represent and champion all commercial interests in the brand, internally and externally
- Work with ex-US partners to optimize their sales performance, ensure consistency of product positioning and globally exploit products
TRANSDURTM-Sufentanil - Chronic Pain Transdermal Product Candidate - Define and implement strategy for co-promotion of 7 day transdermal sufentanil patch
Current Commercial Product Lines (ALZET® and LACTEL®) - Manage and maximize profitability of business units
- Explore and identify opportunities and areas of growth
- Provide leadership and direction to team members
Commercial Strategic Support - Define commercial opportunity for early stage development programs such as ELADURTM (TRANSDUR-Bupivacaine)
- Identify appropriate products for in-licensing to US market and lead the execution of these opportunities
- Work with opportunity assessment team to identify new product opportunities and define commercial opportunities
- Proactively assist Business Development in their outlicensing efforts for selected programs, including identification of potential partners, positioning of commercial opportunity and structuring of deal terms
Requirements:
- BS degree in a science or business related discipline. MBA highly preferred as well as time spent as a PMR
- A minimum of 15 years direct management experience with a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company in sales, marketing and strategic marketing, with at least 3-5 years sales leadership experience in the hospital market
- Experience with new product launches in the hospital market required
- Established track record of building organizations and effective cross-functional partnering.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills and ability to be team player
- Ability to anticipate market dynamics to create sustainable competitive advantage.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to set goals, build accountability and follow through
- Proactive, energetic, flexible, hardworking and focused
- Must possess a good balance of detail orientation and strategic thinking, as well as financial sophistication
- Track record of successfully launching pharmaceutical products, including in the hospital market.
- Proven ability to promote a positive work environment and set the highest standards for business ethics and integrity
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally
